History Of Rugby

It is widely believed that the sport of rugby has its origins with the initiative of William Webb-Ellis who in 1823  "with a fine disregard for the rules of football .

as played in his time, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it

 During the early 19th century, football games became a popular recreation in English public schools. Various schools developed their own rules for the game. The rules of the game developed by Rugby School were gradually taken all over Britain and the rest of the world.

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) was founded 1871 for the purpose of standardizing the rules of the game worldwide, to facilitate inter-club competitions

All over the world, rugby is one of the biggest sporting events and its World Cup is toward the top of the list of the most-watched sporting events. There are approximately 100 national teams that compete for the title.

The International Rugby Board (IRB) was founded in 1886. With its headquarters in Dublin, the IRB is the world governing and Law making body for the game of Rugby Union.

The day to day business of the Board is conducted by a professional staff of over 40, the majority of whom are based in Dublin. There are 8 Regional Development Managers working in Europe, Asia, Africa,The Americas and Oceania.

Rugby is played by men and women, boys and girls, in more that 100 countries across 5 continents, and the IRB membership currently totals 96 Unions and 5 regional Associations.
